Domestic Violence Legal Assistance Program (DVLAP)

What is Domestic Violence?

Domestic violence is a pattern of controlling behavior that can involve physical, emotional, sexual, or financial abuse. It’s about one person exerting power over another. Here are some warning signs to look out for in a relationship:

  • Moving too fast and showering you with flattery early on.
  • Trying to isolate you from friends and family.
  • Pressuring you to quit activities, school, or work.
  • Disregarding your boundaries.
  • Being excessively jealous and accusing you of infidelity.
  • Constantly monitoring your whereabouts and contacting you.
  • Criticizing or belittling you.
  • Refusing to take responsibility for their actions.
  • Blaming past relationships for their problems.
  • Controlling your finances or running up debt.
  • Displaying anger issues.

Domestic violence can happen in any relationship, regardless of age, income, gender, or background.

How can DVLAP help you?

We assist survivors of domestic violence, regardless of income. While we do have some income guidelines, we help anyone who can’t afford a lawyer, prioritizing those with lower incomes. You don’t need to be a US citizen or permanent resident to get our help. We help undocumented individuals who have experienced abuse or are survivors of assault or trafficking.

Our services include legal representation for various civil matters, focusing on helping survivors achieve economic independence. We can help with issues like obtaining child and spousal support, dividing marital assets, custody and visitation, public assistance, housing problems, consumer rights, and employment matters.
