Foreclosure Prevention Project (FPP)

What is the FPP?

The Foreclosure Prevention Project (FPP) offers free legal assistance to eligible low- and moderate-income homeowners at risk of foreclosure. You can get help if:

  • Your lender has started a court case for:
    • Your first mortgage
    • Your second mortgage or home equity loan
    • Your reverse mortgage
  • OR Your county (or city) has started a tax foreclosure case against you

How Can FPP Help You?

Attorneys at the Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York are available to help you prevent foreclosure on your home. We also offer free legal services to eligible tenants and others facing eviction due to foreclosure, as well as to former homeowners facing eviction after foreclosure. All these services are completely free of charge. The Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York is funded by the NYS Attorney General Homeownership Protection Program to support homeowners in foreclosure cases.

Scam Alert:

Beware of scams targeting homeowners facing foreclosure. You may receive letters or see online ads offering foreclosure assistance, but not all are legitimate. Some may ask for money to help save your home. Visit agscamhelp.com, a website by the New York Attorney General, to find HUD certified free housing counseling agencies in your area and report scams.
